Hello Bangkok!

When not in Bangkok, we dream about this bowl of soup. The vendor that dishes this up is out of this world! We often wonder if the memory of this soup is better than the real thing. It isn't. My mind can't dream up anything more wonderful than this.

I did it. I tried some of David's bugs. I ate one and threw up a little in the back of my throat. As I have a firm two taste rule, I had to try another one. It was no better the second time around. David is wrong...They don't taste like the world's best potato chips. They taste like cricket. He thinks that the large grasshoppers are better than the crickets, but there was no way in hell I was going to let that squish and crunch through my teeth.

  1. I've had the grasshoppers and thought they were fine!

  2. Natalie, I'm with you. The bugs are not just a mental thing... they are just oily fried crisp (with a spray of soy sauce). Now, has David tried the little fried baby birds sold outside of Chatuchak Market?! I try most everything and could not get myself to overcome the mental challenge of that one. Blaghhhh....

  3. Shelby: You have piqued David's curiosity and he'd like to try those little birds. We'll be back there next weekend. Would you be able to provide some guidance as to where to find them?

  4. The asian soup looks good. What do you call it? There are more asian recipe at Foodista (http://www.foodista.com/) check it out sometimes but I doubt there's a bug recipe there.

  5. I would agree that some things are simply not meant to be for human consumption. Crickets and grasshoppers would absolutely fall into that category for me. I do applaud you for at least trying them once (or, well...twice). I usually say I'll try anything. But there is a limit to even that.

  6. @Jim:

    Thanks for the comment.

Once, I accidentally ate raw chicken sushi. It was part of a mixed seafood tray at a little sushi hut in New Zealand. I never would have eaten it had I read the ingredients first. That's my limit! Even worse is that it wasn't that bad.
